The 484th Army Reserve Band will make its first Buttermilk Festival appearance on Wednesday, July 6. The 7:15 p.m.performance will take place in the performance center at Buttermilk Creek Park in Fond du Lac, and will be moved to the County Fairgrounds in the event of bad weather.

 

The  Concert Band is one of the professional performing ensembles that make up the 484th Army Band from Milwaukee, WI.  Under the command of Chief Warrant Officer Two Kenneth Fabis with Kenneth Arthur (First Sergeant), this 36 member group has delighted audiences in Germany, Romania, Belgium, Holland, Alaska, Florida, Georgia, New York, South Dakota, Texas, and Virginia, as well as their home state of Wisconsin since 1943.

The Soldiers from the 484th come from Wisconsin, as well as Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Colorado. The band consists of Music Performance Teams (MPTs) which include Concert Band, Contemporary Band, Marching/Ceremonial Band, Brass Quintet, Woodwind Quintet, Jazz Combo, Dixie Band, and Bugle music. The Band assembles one weekend per month and has fourteen days of active duty per year. Some of the full time occupations of the band members include students, music education/music industry, law enforcement, medical/therapeutic, pharmaceutical, multi-media journalism, and management.

 

Included on the 484th roster is Dan Elsinger, a percussionist who graduated from Goodrich High School in Fond du Lac and currently resides in Milwaukee. Two young Fond du Lac musicians currently perform with the 484th Army Band: Jacob Lepien on trombone and Tom Nachtwey on trumpet. Both men are members of the Symphonic Band as well.  Nachtwey’s father, Tim Nachtwey, also served in the 484th, where he played French horn for many years prior to his recent retirement.

 

The concert is free; a free-will offering will be received. A food concession, serving sandwiches, desserts and beverages, will be available beginning at 6:00 p.m. Next up on the summer concert schedule is the Symphonic Band’s 37th annual Family Night on July 13, featuring an special appearance at 6:00 p.m. by the PRESTO Youth Orchestra from Køege, Denmark. PRESTO will also perform at Holy Family Church on July 12.
