The Wisconsin Symphonic Winds will make their first Buttermilk Festival appearance on Wednesday, July 3. The 7:15 p.m. performance will take place in the Wifler Performance Center at Buttermilk Creek Park, and will be moved to the County Fairgrounds in the event of bad weather.
Under the direction of Dr. Mark Fonder, The Wisconsin Symphonic Winds is a regional, professional level wind ensemble that has performed every summer since its inaugural season in 2004. Past performances include multiple consecutive years as part of the prestigious Green Lake Festival of Music, a collaboration with the Appleton Boy Choir, and an appearance at the WMEA State Conference in Madison.
Organized and co-founded by Dr. Rob McWilliams, former Director of Bands at UW-Oshkosh, the group has been led since 2015 by Dr. Mark Fonder. A lifelong music educator, Fonder returned to his native state of Wisconsin after his retirement from a long tenure on the Ithaca (NY) College School of Music faculty in 2015.

The concert program will feature a variety of recent and traditional American music, including selections from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, Echoes of the 1860s arranged by Hunsberger, and Festival Overture on the American Air “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Also on the program are Wolf River Sunset by Wisconsin composer John Harmon, and Blues Brothers Revue – a medley that includes I Can’t Turn You Loose, Soul Man, Soul Finger, and Everybody Needs Somebody to Love.
The concert is free; a free-will offering will be received.
