The Fond du Lac Symphonic Band will present its 44th annual Cathedral Concert at St. Paul’s Cathedral on Sunday, Nov. 17. Under the direction of Dale Shipe, the concert will begin at 3:00 p.m. Arpad Muranyi will perform a recital on the Cathedral organ prior to the concert at 2:30 p.m.
The program will open with Cenotaph, a Fanfare for Band by Jack Stamp. To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the invasion of Normandy, the Band will perform James Barnes’ Lonely Beach (Normandy, 1944). An intense and hauntingly beautiful tone poem, it depicts the scenes on Omaha Beach on D-Day.
Highlighting the program is a major 20th century work for concert band: La Fiesta Mexicana by H. Owen Reed. Subtitled a Mexican Folk Song Symphony, the three movements bring to life the contrasts and contradictions of a Mexican religious festival: serious and comic, festive and solemn, devout and pagan, boisterous and tender. Suspiros de España, a paso doble by Andalusian composer Antonio Alvarez, will add to the Hispanic portion of the concert.

To herald the coming holiday season, the band will perform Blithe Bells by Percy Grainger, an original adaptation of the Bach chorale: “Sheep May Safely Graze.” In a lighter vein, Jerry Bilik’s The Twelve Days of Christmas is a jovial, often whimsical set of variations on the familiar English Christmas Carol.
In keeping with long-standing tradition, the band’s musicians will both sing and play Salvation Is Created, a choral work by Russian composer Pavel Tchesnokov, arranged for band by Bruce Houseknecht. The concert will close with the band singing John Rutter’s The Lord Bless You and Keep You.
There is no admission charge for the concert. A free-will offering will be received.
