The Fond du Lac Symphonic Band will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the dedication of the performance center in Buttermilk Creek Park on Wednesday, August 8. Members of the original Buttermilk Performance Center Steering Committee will be honored guests for the event, which will begin at 7:15 p.m. at the Wifler Performance Center in Buttermilk Creek Park.
The program will include selections from the original dedication concert in 1988, plus music to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of American composer Leonard Bernstein.

Conductor Emeritus Ray C. Wifler will be on hand to conduct the Giddings and Lewis March by Edgar Theissen, which was commissioned by the Band in 1981. Five years later, G & L CEO George Becker accepted the invitation to serve as General Chair of the Performance Center Steering Committee. Also from the 1988 concert program, bassoon soloist will perform Hungarian Rondo by C. M. von Weber. Vocalist Ellie Thelen will sing Vienna Dreams, along with a medley of favorites by The Carpenters.
Leonard Bernstein compositions include Danzon from the ballet Fancy Free and Gee Officer Krupke from West Side Story. A Bernstein Tribute, arranged by Grundman, features four tunes from West Side Story, three dance episodes from On the Town, and excerpts from Overture to Candide.
Other selections include Steven Reinke’s recent tone poem, The Witch and the Saint, Big Band Polka, the circus march Rolling Thunder by Fillmore, and our national march, Stars and Stripes Forever, by John Philip Sousa.
A food concession will be available throughout the evening. The free concert is sponsored by the City of Fond du Lac, and will be moved to the County Fairgrounds Recreation Building in the event of bad weather.
On Wednesday, Aug. 15 the Kids from Wisconsin return to Fond du Lac for their 20th consecutive performance at the Buttermilk Festival, and on Aug. 16 the Symphonic Band will perform at Sterr Park in Lomira at 7:30 p.m.
