Salsa Manzana will make its first Buttermilk Festival appearance on Wednesday, August 1st. The 7:15 p.m. concert at the Wifler Performance Center in Buttermilk Creek Park will be moved to the County Fairgrounds in the event of unsuitable weather.
Salsa Manzana is a traditional Latin music ensemble based in Appleton. Founders Carlos Mendez and Mark Te Tai have been entertaining crowds since 2012. With Carlos’ authentic Puerto Rican heritage and Mark’s long-standing relationship with the local music community, the two have assembled a band of top-notch musicians from Oshkosh to Green Bay.
Salsa Manzana rehearses at, and maintains ties with, Lawrence University, and several faculty, students and alumni perform with the group. Faculty member Jose Encarnacion and his wife Marisol joined the group in 2013, adding their Puerto Rican and New York cultures to the mix. As “Musical Director” of the group, Jose brings his professional expertise and personal experience of traditional Latin music forms. Marisol’s background as a professional dance instructor is invaluable, as she weaves dance lessons into many Salsa Manzana events.
Through local events such as Appleton’s Octoberfest, Fox Jazz Festival, Oshkosh’s Waterfest, and now the Buttermilk Festival in Fond du Lac, Salsa Manzana has helped develop the Fox Valley’s growing culture of diversity. Salsa Manzana’s performances range from multicultural festivals, charity fundraisers and educational school events, to Cinco de Mayo celebrations, Latin-flavored weddings and quinceañeras.
Salsa Manzana enjoys entertaining and educating audiences throughout Northeastern Wisconsin by promoting Salsa, Mambo, Merengue, Cha Cha, Bachata, Bolero and Latin jazz.
